Gooseneck Hooks and Fifth Wheel Hooks As a tow truck driver you must have heard these two terms before, so what is the difference between a gooseneck hitch and a fifth wheel hitch?LUEN takes you through the process to find out exactly what  the difference is between a gooseneck and a fifth wheel.

★What is a gooseneck hitch?

A gooseneck hitch is attached to a gooseneck trailer by a hitch ball, this design allows the weight of the truck to be supported only by the surface of the ball, and can tow a small weight with a fifth wheel hitch, typically around 30,000 pounds, and is commonly used for towing livestock trailers

★What is a 5th wheel hitch?

A 5th wheel has a flatbed on the truck with a hole in the middle. The trailer has a flat plate with a pin that protrudes downward and inserts into a hole in a plate mounted on the truck. This distributes the weight over a larger area than a gooseneck. With a fifth wheel hitch, you can safely apply more trailer weight to the truck. Fifth wheel trailers have weight capacities ranging from 16,000 lbs to 30,000 lbs. Their most common use is towing RV trailers and large campers.

Gooseneck hitches are less damaging to the truck, relatively inexpensive, and make it easier to vacate the truck bed with smaller, lighter components.

In contrast, fifth-wheel hitches typically provide smoother, quieter, more stable towing and come in a variety of weight capacities to fit a wide range of trucks.
