What is a tractor truck? What is a trailer?
A semi-trailer is a trailer without a front axle. In the United States, the term is also used to refer to a combination of a truck and a semi-trailer, known as a tractor truck. Most of the weight of the semi-trailer is supported by the towing unit or a removable front axle assembly called a dolly, or the rear end of another trailer. The other part of the semi-trailer's weight is half-supported (half-supported) by its own wheels, which support only the rear of the semi-trailer.
Semi-trailers are often fitted with landing gear (lowerable outriggers) that act as a support during decoupling. Many semi-trailers have completely removable and movable wheels.
Semi-trailers are preferred over full-trailers in transportation because full-trailers have front and rear axles. Ease of reversing is one of the main advantages of semi-trailers. Road tractor trucks attached to semi-trailers are often referred to as semi-trailer trucks or “semi” in North America and Australia, and as articulated vans or “artic” in the United Kingdom. Other terms are “B train” or (when there are three or more trailers) “road train”. Twin trailer combinations can use a dolly, or “conversion dolly” (Australian and American English), which essentially adds one or three axles under the nose of the second semi-trailer. The first semi-trailer is attached to the power unit via the tractor's fifth-wheel coupling, while the conversion dolly, already attached to the second semi-trailer, is attached to the first semi-trailer by means of a drawbar. In Australian English, the tractor is referred to as the “prime mover” and the combination of prime mover and trailer is referred to as the “semi-trailer” or single trailer.
